Trader Arraigned Over 33.7kg of Banned Drugs

A trader at Lagos International Trade Fair Market, Ojo, Lagos, Kelechi Nwaobasi, was today arraigned before a Federal High Court, Lagos, for attempting to export 33.7 kilograms of Ephedrine and Methamphetamine, by the National Drug Laws Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

NDLEA in charge number FHC/L/116c/18, stated that the accused was arrested with the 15.6 kilograms of Ephedrine, on February 15 and 22, 2018, during examination and clearing of cargo at SACHOL exported shed at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja-Lagos.

NDLEA also stated accused was arrested with 10.2 kilograms of Methamphetamine, and 7.7 kilograms of Ephedrine, on February 21, 2018, at International Trade Fair Complex, Lagos.

The prosecutor, Mr. Fingere Dennis, told the court that the two banned substances are narcotic drugs which are similar to cocaine, heroine, LSD, and also used in manufacturing of psychotropic substance.

The prosecutor also told the court that the action of the accused is  contrary to and punishable under  sections 11(b) and 19 of the National Drugs Laws Enforcement Agency Act, 2004.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Following his not guilty plea, the presiding judge, Justice Mojisola Olatoregun, admitted to bail in the sum of N15 million with two sureties.

One of the sureties, according to the judge, must be a Civil Servant on Grade Level 16, in federal of Lagos state government establishment. While the other must be a landed property owner within the court's jurisdiction.

The judge also ordered that all the documents provided by the sureties must be verified by the Court's Deputy Chief Registrar (DCR).

Justice Olatoregun, while adjourning the matter till June 13, for trial, ordered that the accused be remanded in prison custody pending the fulfilment of the bail terms.
