20 dons Reject Age Limit of Unilorin VC Position

At least 20 professors of the University of Ilorin, Kwara State, have opposed a 60-year age limit for eligible contestants for the seat of the Vice-Chancellor of the institution.

The decision, which was taken by the university’s governing council, did not go down well with many professors, who consider it as inimical to their growth within the system.

The council, had in a vacancy advertising the position of the VC, stated that “candidates who would have attained the age of 60 years at the point of assumption of duty (as VC) need not apply.”

The aggrieved professors, in a letter to the council’s chairman on Friday, said that the age limit was causing disquiet in the university.

Spokesperson for the protesting dons, Prof. Yinka Adesiyun, said that since the law backing the change in retirement age of professors in federal universities from 65 years to 70 years was signed in June 2012, the eligibility of such persons for the position of VC was also increased by different governing councils of federal universities from 60 to 65 years.
