Notorious Brazil-based Nigerian Drug Baron, Okeh Desmond Simon Bags Two Yrs in Prison Over Drug Trafficking

A Brazil-based Nigerian, Okeh Desmond Simon, has been sentenced to two years imprisonment for trafficking Cocaine, by a Lagos Federal High Court.

The convict was sentenced to the jail term by the court presided over by Justice AbdulAziz Anka, after pleaded guilty to a count charge of trafficking in 1.806 kilogramms of Cocaine leveled against him by the anti-drug drug agency, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

Giving the fact of the case, NDLEA's prosecutor, Mr. Abu Ibrahim, informed the court that the convict was arrested on May 27, 2016, at the Murtala Muhammad International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, during an emergency landing of an Emirates Airline Ek 262, which departed from Sao Paulo, Brazil, and going to Dubai, the United Arab Emirate's capital.

Abu further informed the court the the convict, who had complication due to the ingestion of the banned substances, forced the airline to have emergency landing, and that upon medical test conducted on him, it was discovered that he was having Cocaine in his body system.

NDLEA in a charge marked FHC/C/313c/2016, alleged that the convict without lawful authority, imported 1.805 kilograms of Cocaine into the country.

The offence according to the prosecutor, Mr. Abu is contrary to and punishable under Section 11 (c) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act Cap N30 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

The convict had pleaded guilty to the charge when he was arraigned on August 10.

Upon the convict's plea, his lawyer, Bayo Onifade, who stood in for Chief (Mrs.) Lilian Omotunde, pleaded with the court to to be lenient and tamper Justice with mercy and in sentencing the convict.

Consequently, the presiding judge, Justice Anka sentenced the convict to twenty four months imprisonment starting from with effect from August 18, 2016.

The judge also ordered that the seized drug be destroyed if there is no any appeal against the judgement.
